Team Overview

The Tucson J Stingrays is a year-round competitive swim program offering training opportunities for swimmers at a variety of ages and ability levels.

Our goal is to create an environment where swimmers can have fun, develop great technique, learn how to train and compete, and become the best swimmers they can be.

Our Program

The Stingrays are organized into five progressive training groups:

Pups - Introduction to swim team

Copper - Learn to Practice

Silver - Learn to Train

Gold - Train to Compete

Platinum - Compete with Purpose

As swimmers progress through the program, practices gradually increase in duration, frequency, intensity, and expectations. Our youngest athletes focus on developing strong fundamentals and learning how to participate in a team environment, while our older and more experienced swimmers progress toward increasingly competitive training and racing opportunities.

Finding the Right Group

Practice groups are loosely based on age, but placement considers much more than age or speed alone.

Our coaches consider each swimmer's:

  • Swimming ability and technique
  • Age and developmental readiness
  • Competitive swimming experience
  • Independence and coachability
  • Training readiness

Our goal is to place every swimmer in an environment where they can be challenged, successful, and continue developing over the long term.

All prospective Stingrays complete a swim assessment before joining the team so our coaching staff can recommend the appropriate starting group.

Competition

Swim meets are an important part of the Stingrays experience and give athletes an opportunity to put what they learn in practice into action.

As swimmers progress through the program, they are encouraged to compete more frequently and may work toward qualifying for championship competitions including Arizona Regionals, Arizona State Championships, and SWAGR Championships.

Our program emphasizes long-term development over short-term results. Meets are opportunities to race, learn, have fun with teammates, and continue developing as athletes.
